One example you've missed out, that I felt was a real inspiration, was 'The YORB' done by Dan O'Sullivan and others at ITP in NYU's Tisch School of Arts during 1993 http://itp.nyu.edu/~dbo3/proj/yorb.htm The 1992 project 'Piazza Virtuale' by Van Gogh TV is also wildly impressive.
